It has been almost a year since President Rotevatn, the Minister from Norway, brought down the gavel on the first part of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.1).

Over 12,000 people attended the two-day online meeting, including leaders and ministers of the environment from more than 150 nations. The Assembly agreed to a new Medium Term Strategy, Programme of Work and budget for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), amongst other outcomes.

In just a few weeks, the resumed fifth session, UNEA 5.2, will take place online and in-person in Nairobi from 28 February – 2 March 2022.

Held under the theme “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” UNEA 5.2 will focus on relevant issues, such as marine litter, nature-based solutions, green recovery and chemical waste management.

Immediately after UNEA-5.2, the Assembly will hold a Special Session from 3 - 4 March 2022, devoted to commemorating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the UNEP in 1972 called UNEP@50. The special session will be held under the theme "Strengthening UNEP for the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
