The Project Development objective is to protect transboundary waters in the Niger and Senegal River Basins through elimination of POPs pesticide-use and substantial reduction and elimination of other toxic pesticides used in agriculture; while augmenting agricultural productivity and net economic benefits to farmers. The Project Purpose is to demonstrate best practices for contaminant prevention and increased agricultural productivity through participatory farmer-education approaches. Key project objectives are: 1) awareness raising and establishing community baselines, 2) assessments of freshwater contaminants, 3) developing Best Practices, and 4) developing IPPM community and trainer networks.

The project’s primary goal is to carry out in-depth surveys of HCFC consumption and, where applicable, production in Article 2 countries with economies in transition (CEITs) in Europe and Central Asia (specifically Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Ukraine), and identify needs for further activities to assist these countries to remain in compliance with their Montreal Protocol obligations.

The project will: i. Enable the preparation of the National Implementation Plan with respect to POPs in The Bahamas; ii. Assist The Bahamas in meeting its reporting and other obligations under the Convention; iii. Strengthen The Bahamas’ national capacity to manage POPs specifically and chemicals generally.
