The effectiveness of antimicrobials is in jeopardy because microorganisms have become resistant to them.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires urgent action to protect the ability to treat human, animal, and plant diseases. It is also essential for ensuring food safety and security, supporting economic development and equity, protecting the environment, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Prevention is at the core of the action and environment is a key part of the solution. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) provides science-based evidence to help shape AMR strategies and ensure that environmental dimensions are fully addressed in the global response.
The work of UNEP on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is led by the Chemicals and Health Branch.
